Compassion, Courage, Justice

Jesus said, "Go and do the same."

Intent

At Monkton Church of England Primary School we believe that through our PSHE and RHE provision we allow every child to flourish and develop through their spiritual, moral, social, emotional and physical development, and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. This helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives, in order to become informed, active and responsible citizens.

Monkton is a HeartSmart School. HeartSmart is a creative approach to build character, emotional health and resilience in children. Equipping children with foundational principles and skills that will improve their mental health, relationships and academic achievement, at Monkton CEP School we believe that ‘In God’s Eyes, everyone is special’ and we want every child to know that they are loved, valued and cared for. We recognise the value of educating the heart alongside educating the mind.

Our PSHE curriculum is linked with our Christian values and our sex and relationship education (SRE). Through these lessons, children will learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them.

Lessons in this scheme of work have their foundations in seeing each and everybody’s value in society, having an appreciation of others and promoting strong and positive views of self. Our scheme aims to cover a wide range of the social and emotional aspects of learning, enabling children to develop their identity and self-esteem as active, confident members of their community.

Implementation

Our PSHE and RHE scheme of work is centred around the Heartsmart scheme which is taught in five thematic units, which consist of seven lessons, each with supporting materials. These thematic units are taught to each year group each year. This enables children to recall and build upon previous learning, exploring the underlying principles of RSE education regularly at a depth that is appropriate for the age and stage of the child.

  • Don’t forget to let love in

  • Too much selfie isn’t healthy

  • Don’t hold on to what’s wrong

  • Fake is a mistake

  • No way through isn’t true

Heartsmart units are designed to be delivered in a creative manner, using many approaches such as role play, discussion and games with groups of various sizes. These activities enable children to build compassion and resilience as well and keeping children engaged. These sessions also reflect our Christians Foundations and learning values.

Impact

Through our PSHE and RHE curriculum children will leave Monkton with core values and principles that develop confident, resourceful and inclusive young adults. They will have an appreciation for their own and others needs and be aware of this in their day to days lives as they move through their lives. This will then enable them to make good choices and lead a happy and fulfilling life.
